Flowing water

Fließendes Wasser für das Waisenhaus Tamale Ghana

Two years ago we started this water project with the aim to build a water pipe for the childrens‘ home and the neighborhood.

Why was there a need to build a water pipe?

Water is rare. Therefore buying water in Ghana as well as in other developing countries is expensive. Before we had this water pipe, water had to be bought and stored in big tanks next to the house. Next to hygienic aspects for flowing water rather than standing water, also the efforts to carry every liter inside the home to wash, clean and cook for 16 children, was very challenging.

What is the challenge when realizing such a project in Ghana?

The area around the children’s home is a quite rural area. Therefore the infrastructure is not very developed. Furthermore the standards for construction works is different than in Germany. Before building the pipe, we had to communicate with the ministry of infrastructure in Ghana and the local company who was finally building it. In Ghana you also need to consider challenges regarding the climate. Construction works like this are hardly possible during raining season for example.

Since when do the children are happy about fluent water?

In April 2016 the water pipe was finished. Since than the installed toilets, showers and sinks could are working perfectly and carrying bucket after bucket stopped now. For our home this was an important development.
